Erika Vikander - Rockstar Throwback Throwdown
Check out the latest from Erika Vikander’s Blog:
Saturday April 7th marked the first Halfpipe contest of its kind. The idea of the contest was to bring back some style and well, honestly, some fun back into the snowboard scene. The format of the contest was unlike most as the athletes were only allowed to spin up to 540 degrees of rotation. This changes the game in halfpipe contests, and allows people like me who wouldn’t dare enter a halfpipe contest nowadays, to participate.
The weather couldn’t have been better for the event, blue skies, a light breeze, so many stoked athletes and spectators it was a recipe for a wonderful day. We started in the 22 foot halfpipe at the top of Freeway Terrain park around 8am for practice. Not being a halfpipe rider, this was a challenge as the pipe had yet to get sun on it, and was a sheet of ice. I made the best of it though and couldn’t help smiling the entire time I made my way down. I was surrounded by some awesome ladies throwing down and inspiring me to do the same.
After 3 runs, we were fed a boxed lunch from the event hosts. Thanks guys! Then it was time to make our way over to the mini pipe. As of late, we have been spoiled in our sport, perfect pipes, perfectly manicured jumps, and so on, it was a great challenge to see what the first hand-dug pipe looked like and get to session some truly gnarly obstacles within the beast.
We got to jam for about half an hour with all the ladies in the mini-pipe, and it was quite the show! I was stoked to see so many people out there, having as much fun as humanly possible, and it made me really appreciate what I get to do every day.
At the end of the day, I don’t even know where I placed, but I had more fun that I have at a contest in a while, and that is something to say. I hope to see this contest come back to Breckenridge next year, and hope to see some more style oriented formats like this in future competitions. Thanks to everyone for an unforgettable day, and I look forward to doing this event again.
