Inspiration from the One Life Crew

Diana Sciandra

The one life crew is a group of female professional snowboarders who bonded over their similar take on life.  “One Life” is their motto, meant to inspire presentness, fun, and playfulness.  Learn about their mission to spread this philosophy wherever they go here:

I have met a few of these women and I always walk away asking, “How are they so happy?  How do they achieve so much and remain so down to earth? How do I get some of that in my head?” Well, it turns out a lot of people ask these questions, and are inspired by these women, most notably one really cool teenager, Marie-Pierre Cantin.

Below are Marie Pierre’s tribute videos to the One Life Crew.  Not only will you be inspired by the life of girls like Marie-France Roy, Chanelle Sladics, Kjersti Buaas, Isabelle Lalive and Jamie Anderson, but you will also be inspired by Marie-Pierre Cantin, she is the coolest teenager I know.

I had to know a little bit more about this inspiring girl so check out my interview with her…

Age : 17

Hometown : Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada

How did you find out about the one life crew?

I was watching snowboard edits 3 years ago on youtube, and I found out about the roxy team, so I started to watch edits about Kjersti Buaas, Lisa Wiik, Torah Bright.  Through these videos I heard about Chanelle Sladics, then Sarka Pancochova, etc. Finally, in a video I heard one of them talking about One Life, so I searched videos about One Life and the more I watched videos, the more I learned about the movement. What I love is that all the girls in One Life are my favorite snowboarders and inspiration. I look up to them a lot, and the videos are a little bit like my life and the things I do with my friends .

How did you get the footage?

I got the footage mostly from Youtube, and a little bit from Vimeo, from their account ‘’ this is one life ‘’. And I read everything on their website. I decided to do edits about them to show everybody how funny they are, and why I love them so much. Also, I really love editing, it’s my other passion outside of snowboarding. I love everything in the media.

What inspires you?

One life girls, definitely. Before I knew about them, I was scared to go in the park or to ride big mountains. I was afraid of getting hurt. However, even if I’m still afraid sometimes, when I started to look up to them, I realized the only way to improve was to get back up every time I fall, that even if I dream of becoming like them, the only way to reach it was to stop believing and start practicing. They never and will never give up and for me, that’s a true rider’s heart.

What’s BGA?

Last year, before I even heard about One Life, I had an idea : I wanted to create an all girl snowboard crew with my friends at the mountain because I don’t know a lot of girl riders here.  At the beginning it was for a school project, which I ended up not doing.  However, I still wanted to create my snowboard crew but I didnt know where to start, but my friend told me he had a surprise for me.

A week later, I received a message from Marie-France Roy saying that she wanted to help me with my association. (The surprise was that my friend talked to her about my project ).  She gave me advice on how to get started. I also wrote a message to Chanelle Sladics, and she was very helpful. There are now 5 members in BGA ( Boarder Girls Association), we already have a cap, now we need a logo. We want to share our passion, a little bit like One Life. We want to ride, to do edits, maybe little roadtrips together, and have fun! If it works, we have also talked about doing some snowboard clinics, since we’re all instructors.

We really enjoy watching One Life videos, so we want to share the feeling we have when we watch their videos. We’re younger, we’re not as good as them, but we have the passion and I think that’s what counts the most. We don’t know how to promote BGA because we dont have footage yet, but we have big plans for this season!

What is high school like these days. Do many kids snowboard?

I’m not in high school because In Quebec we have something called ‘’ Cegep ‘’ It’s after high school (it ends at age 16) and before university. It’s pretty cool, but there’s not a lot of snowboarders. In my class I think we’re only 3. The best place to meet snowboarders is at the mountain!

What female snowboarders would like to see represent Canada in the new slopestyle event at the 2014 Winter Olympics?

Marie-France Roy !!! Even though she’s more into films than competitions now.

What are your goals for the future?

My goals for the future are to get better in the park and to go to Whistler. (To ride with Pros like One Life Girls would also be awesome !)
