POM-Pilot: Sarah Cameron
Sarah Cameron is the POM-PILOT (AKA founder and co-owner) of POM POM, an all-girls skate and snow wax brand, and sister brand to MagicalGoGo. This fun company makes some lovely scented earth-friendly wax products, as well as some super cute soft goods, and the best strawberry Lip Bom ever. Which, sadly, my boyfriend recently ran through the drier and melted all over my jeans. Damn him.
Sarah and Roger skate away from their wedding. Gotta love a girl who can skateboard in a dress!
Tell everyone about POM POM:
HeLLO from POM POM! POM POM is super psyched to be the FiRST and ONLY multi-sport (skate, snow, surf) wax and accessories company for GiRLS in the UNiVERSE! At POM POM we heart earth and make eco-friendly products that not only perform, but look and smell awesome.
How did you come up with the idea to make wax for girls?
First off, POM POM is the sister brand to the most radical Magical Go-Go, (for those of you who don’t know, we’re total BFFs). The idea for POM POM was sort of like one of those lightbulb moments. I was working with Roger on Magical Go-Go stuff and after looking at some of the illustrations that he did for the boxes (which included a guy farting while waxing his board), I laughed and said I could tell that a guy designed this. That just got me thinking about how wax and accessories are typically geared and marketed toward guys. This leaves girls in the dark and feeling intimidated about how to do things, such as waxing and tuning their boards. All of this results in girls either not waxing their board or finding a guy friend of theirs to do it for them. I’m totally for girl-power, and I think the way to get girls psyched on snowboarding is for them to own it, and this begins with learning how to take care of their equipment. Knowledge is power, and POM POM hearts POWER.
We love the logo, any awesome plans involving her? She should have her own shred TV show.
That would be so rad. Roger and I actually had another “project” that was supposed to be an animated show for kids called St. Rebel (http://www.st-rebel.com), but that’s a whole other story. As for POM POM, she lives in an awesome illustrated universe that POPS! With time, her world will be revealed more and more.
Are you doing anything else with your illustrations?
For now we’re really focusing on the packaging and eventually get into some limited edition t-shirt illustrations. Also some collaborations are in the works.
How did you get involved in the snowboard industry?
Ever since I started snowboarding, I was hooked. But honestly, there was no master plan for starting POM POM. It began with Magical Go-Go, which started as skate wax, and after that came the snowboard wax. Roger and I just have some crazy creative chemistry and relentless energy, and POM POM is the result. We’ve got backgrounds both within the industry and outside the industry, and the outside influences are what keeps things fresh and exciting for us.
Lots of girls dream of being sponsored. What do you look for in a team rider?
POM POM is super psyched and honored to have Marie France-Roy, Robin Van Gyn, Caroline Onzik, Femke Henriqes-Hillbink and Kana Terui on the team. These girls are amazing riders and have awesome attitudes. POM POM looks for girls that not only have skills, but are tuff, super fun, think outside of the box, push the limits and never give up. But most important, they need to be able to laugh at themselves.

If POM POM makes you super rich and famous, what will you do with all that cash? 12 sports cars or a diamond grill?
It’s not cash that I’m ever after, although paying off my student loans would be awesome. My dream would be to live in the mountains in the winter and at the beach for the summer. Snowboard all winter and surf all summer. I don’t know if it could get better than that.
What’s the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you on a snowboard?
HAHA...that’s a funny question....I actually don’t get embarrassed very often because I’m the first person to laugh at myself. One thing I did do on a snowboard, as a dare, was pee off a chairlift at Stowe, Vermont. That was awesome. And let me tell you, it was NOT easy. I don’t even remember if I got anything as a prize.....
Do you get to travel a lot with POM POM?
I wish. Not yet. We’ve had a lot of offers to go places, especially Japan, and hopefully in the future we’ll be able to start filling up our passports.
Where do you really want to ride?
Anywhere there’s fresh powder. I got some sick tracks last season at the golf course that’s 5 minutes away. It was so rad. That’s what I’m talking about.
You’re from the East Coast. Does that mean you like to jib everything?
I like powder as much as the next guy. Maybe being from the east coast, or “Ice Coast” as people like to say, makes you appreciate those rare, powder days even more. But that’s where it’s at for me. I also love to practice my grabs on my trampoline. Does that count?
What’ll be your setup this season?
Honestly, I’ll ride anything. 2 years ago I dusted off this 1997 PIll 139 (show sample never released), super heavy, not even meant to be ridden. I loved every minute of it.
Most annoying trend in snowboarding?
Getting too political and hating on everyone. Snowboarding should just be about having fun.
Any last comments?
POM POM is about motivating and empowering girls to ride. Push the limits and have fun. Also, POM POM hearts Shred Betties and we want to say what up to GNAR GNAR bunny! And make sure to check out the ever-awesome www.iheartpompom.com!
