Molly Aguirre

Halley O’Brien caught up with Molly Aguirre in the Burton tent at the 2008 X-Games to ask her about riding in the x-games, family, and more. Here’s the interview:
Thanks for taking the time to do this. What is it like being at the X-Games? What was your first experience at the X-Games?
My first experience was I think 5 years ago, I wanna say. I was 19 or so, and both Mason and I got a wildcard spot. I think we were just both more taken aback that we were here than cared about about the contest. Now it’s more about the contest.
Speaking of your brother Mason, is it annoying having a kid brother around all of the time?
Well I grew up the middle child of two brothers, so I basically owe them all the credit for where I am today because they kind of roughed me up as a little girl, and that’s is where I got my competitive drive and my interest in sports, since I always wanted to do what they were doing. Mason and I have always been really close, we’ve never bickered or anything, we’ve always been best friends, so having him around is actually a blessing for me.
Oh, that’s awesome. So did your brothers get you interested in the park, or was that something you did on your own?
Yeah, my older brother Tyler actually wanted to snowboard, and Mason and I always wanted to do what Tyler did, so we wanted to snowboard too. So, we kinda followed Ty around for 3 or 4 years, and we just kind of took off with it, Mason and I have never really left each others side, we live together, train together, and ride together, it’s awesome.
What’s your favorite thing to do? Do you like park, or do you get really stoked on powder?
Well, I really love everything, and I’ve really always pursued everything in the sport. I like to be well rounded and do everything. I love the feeling of going off a jump, and I love airing out of the pipe, or ripping a powder turn. I love it all, I think everyone should enjoy every aspect of snowboarding.
So what trick are you working on that’s kicking your ass?
Right now I’d have to say back to back 7’s, like a cab 7. Gretchen did one last night - I can get it around, but just grabbing it right, it’s a really hard trick. I’ve been trying to do that, working off combos off jumps, and working on switch backside spins, they’re just the hardest thing in the world, but I’ll get ‘em.
What’s your favorite food to eat before snowboarding?
I usually always go and have a nice latte before going to the mountain. I’m a routine kind of girl, I wake up I get ready, I go to the coffee shop, I have a latte, check my email. I always have a good healthy breakfast, like an oatmeal in the morning, because I never like to stop and go in for lunch for lunch. So I try to have a really good breakfast that’ll last me the whole day… then I go home at the end of the day and pig out.
One last question, do you prefer pirates or ninjas?
Ninja, Ninjas… all the way. Because I really like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Mason and I used to play ninja turtles when we were younger. I don’t know if you know what Facebook is? There’s this thing on it called graffiti where you can leave someone a drawing. When Mason was in Europe last week I drew him a ninja turtle and I was like “kick some ninja ass.”
