How did your love for snowboarding begin?
I started snowboarding when I was like 9 I think. I was a tomboy my whole life and always thought snowboarding, surfing, and skating were really cool. I was also at the age where I did whatever my older brother did, so when he wanted to learn to snowboard so did I. I cried the whole first day I learned, haha, but for some reason I kept going back. Me and my neighbor would bring a flip cam to the mountain and try and film tricks, and that’s when I started to get really stoked on riding.
Where do you spend most of your time riding in the winter?
Here in Vermont I ride Sugarbush. They absolutely kill it and all the homies are always there. When I’m home in Maryland I ride Ski Liberty and Ski Roundtop, which you’ve probably never heard of.
What do you do at Woodward at Copper in the summers? What’s it like being able to ride most of the summer?
I’ve been a counselor out there for the past two years. Being out there for a few months the past few summers has been really awesome. I’ve gotten to meet so many awesome people and I really like it there because there’s not that pressure to be super trendy—I feel like Mt hood might give off that type of vibe. There are tons of kooks at Woodward but they’re the nicest kooks you’ll ever meet. Also, the parks are SO fun. Slushy summer riding is my favorite kind of riding, and being a counselor I’m off from 9-4 every day, which allows me to be on hill every day with no obligations. It definitely gets tiring, but it’s awesome.
Ever thought about making a permanent shift out west?
I’ve definitely thought about it, but I don’t think It’ll happen anytime soon. Colorado is awesome, but it doesn’t feel like home to me. The East Coast does. Maybe later in my life I’d move out to California or something. It’d be cool to be able to surf and skate a bunch there.
We’ve seen you get after some street features in edits. Any plans in the future to put out a full urban part?
Hmmm…that would be so awesome, but way easier said than done. I’m in school full time, so I can’t really chase the snow like some other people can. I am definitely looking forward to getting after some urban though. Last winter I broke my collarbone right around the time when everyone and their mother was over on the East Coast taking advantage of the unreal winter we had, so I didn’t get the chance to get any urban shots. So this year I’m hoping that we get some snow and hopefully I can get a few shots. Probably won’t be enough for a full part though. Maybe after I’m done with school I’ll be able to do something like that.
You look fearless on your board. Any advice to other girls looking to learn new tricks and step up their riding?
I wish I was fearless! I’m a wimp more than I would like to be. But I think its important to ride with people that you want to ride like. Ride with people that will get you hyped and that you have fun with, and it’s way easier to try new things. Also, its important to not take snowboarding too seriously. I like having days where I don’t even touch a rail and I just do some soul boarding/trannyfinding. Snowboarding is about having fun and doing what you want, so do that and you can’t really go wrong.
We enjoy that you can ride with style and creativity, but still put down hammers. What’s most important to you in snowboarding?
Wow thanks! I think I like to put style over most everything else. I like making simple tricks look good, rather than hucking stuff. Creativity is also important too though, I think that’s something that girls snowboarding lacks a little bit. Sugarbush is really conducive to being creative, which is why I like it there.
Contests or filming?
Filming 4 shore
Favorite rider out there right now?
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Oh jeez, I have no idea. I’m just a lost college student at the moment. But hopefully I’ll be snowboarding and skating still. I also want to be better at surfing by then, so maybe I’ll be somewhere where I can do that.
What do you do when you’re not riding?
I like to skate. I’ve also gotten into wheel-throwing lately, so I’ve been doing that almost every day. Other than that I’m probably either doing homework or hanging out in Burlington with tha homies.
