WTF - Bringing Back the Bunny

Former pro snowboarder Circe Wallace has started up a new company featuring “state-of-the-art skiwear technology with a modular fashion experience.”  This begs the question… how is a one piece modular?  I guess it’s just one module.  Like a single wide?

Props to Circe for having the guts to start up her own company, but if I see one more jacket with 10k waterproofing that claims to be revolutionizing the industry by finally combining fashion and function, I’m going to punch someone.  I mean, really?  Their “advanced technological functionality” seems oddly similar to the technology used on most low-end outerwear lines.  Of course, I haven’t tried any of this outerwear - maybe the ultra-shiny fabric aids the snow and water in sliding right off?

Style-wise, Circe Snow isn’t really my cup of tea, but I’m sure it’ll appeal to some.  It’s sort of a mix of snowboard styling and those fur and crystal encrusted ensembles the Aspen jet-setter types wear around town.  The one-piece is reminiscent of the Vans Brigada Jumper from last year… but with a thick coat of lacquer to ritz it up.  Nothing like some extreme sheen to add class!  At least she stuck with a lower waist, avoiding the notorious giant mom jeans ass you usually get with ritzy one piece ensembles.  The two-piece pants have more typical snowboard styling, and are paired with a belted jacket, which seems to be stylish right now.

By far, the most entertaining part of the website is the “mountain etiquette” section, which explains how to be a snow bunny, and tackles the tough issues, like peeing in a one-piece.  Which I still don’t quite get.  Circe’s instructions tell you to tie the sleeves around your waist so they don’t drop on the floor.  But how do you bare your butt to sit on the can with your sleeves around your waist?  Am I missing something here, or does it seem like you’d just pee on your sleeves?  Other advice includes purfume suggestions for the slopes (gotta cover up that stinky fresh mountain air) and polite instructions concerning the avoidance of gaper gap.  Plus, there’s a credo that includes such gems as “The better you look, the more success you’ll have.”  Shit, no wonder I’m so poor.

perfume on the mountain… hmm.. doesn’t that defeat the whole purpose of being outside?

DearTragedy

For the record, I would never wear anything like this, but if you’re into being a snow bunny, they’re not that bad.

70’s anyone? That last one looks like the Riviera in Vegas with all its gold. I dunno how I feel about this situation….

I like the stuff.  Seems that it is difficult to re-invent any jacket, one-piece or even goggle for that matter.  I saw a girl wearing the one piece in Tahoe and it caught my eye…
I typically wear 686 but would be down to try it…it’s just pricy…guessing I’m not the target market…

I’ll stick with my betty rides and burton. I work at a resort and this looks like what the girls who can afford to buy lots of schwag but can’t ride wear…

Sounds like you all enjoy looking like the dudes!  Let’s bring beauty to the mountain…let’s shred and take some turns and look damn good doing so.  Don’t tell me you all have Kelly Clark signed posters in your bed rooms too!!!!
Let’s change it up a bit…so can anyone suggest good gear that makes a lady look classy?  I’m tired of knowing no one can tell if I’m a dude or chick from 100 feet away.  Volcom makes some damn good skinny pants…

One question for you Kelly Vance.  Did you actually ride in Circe Snow gear or are you judging the product from the posted images?

DearTragedy

I don’t care what people think of my ensemble while I’m shredding.  Some days I look more feminine than others, but does it really matter?  Have we gotten so low as to think someone can’t shred because they’re wearing this brand or that color?  Don’t we already have it hard enough being girl snowboarders?  Let’s stick together ladies!

I agree Ozzie. I’d rather ride in my well worn hand-me-down jacket than waste my money on buying super fancy schwag. That’s money I need for gas and lift tickets!!

First and foremost, thank you Kelly for writing about this new company. It’s always great to see women in the industry making a name for themselves after their pro career has ended. I can’t deny that her outerwear is fun and stylish, but I do have a few issues with the direction for which she has taken her company.

I agree with “Supadupa” in regards to being proud to display yourself as a woman while on the slopes, but I do not feel that “bringing back the bunny” is something to be boasting. Sure the term “snow bunny” may be appealing to some, but to me (and I feel to many of our readers here at Shred Betties) a “Snow Bunny” is a derogatory term that is comparing women to a trophy. As if these women are prizes who can ski but their priority is to look good and be sexy, not to ski or ride. They don’t really like the cold, but go out there to have a bit of fun just for the heck of it.

So in my opinion, I do not feel that the marketing scheme adopted by Circe Snow is appropriate or empowering. Do I think that dressing like a dude is the solution to making women on the mountain seem more legit? Do I agree with the statement on the Circe Snow website (also quoted by Kelly) “The better you look, the more success you’ll have?” Absolutely not. It is through the girls who are out there slaying the pow or the park every day making their presence on the mountain; its through accomplished riders like Kelly Clark, Gretchen Blieler, and Hannah Teter who put themselves in the lime-light as positive role-models to all women while simultaneously investing their time to improver our communities;  It’s through organizations like Shred Betties, Betty Rides, Cilla, Nikita, and many others that are working on giving women in the sport an equal voice.

So let me ask you this Miss Supadupa, what is so wrong with having a signed poster of Kelly Clark, an empowered, accomplished, incredible woman hanging up in your room?
