Ski Towns & the Election
So, today we were looking at all of the fun election maps, which break down each state by county, and we noticed an interesting trend. We all know that urban areas tend to go blue, but what about the most important places, the ski towns? Here’s my highly in-depth and scientific analysis of ski town voting.
We were looking at the Colorado map today and noticed that almost all of the counties that had resorts in them were quite strongly for Obama. On the other hand, all of the neighboring counties voted for McCain. Is this because they’re bitter that they don’t get a ski resort and therefore want to hurry up global warming and ruin it for the rest of us? We don’t know. The Shred Betties home office is in Garfield County, which had a nearly even split, presumably between those of us who ride at the Aspen mountains, and the people who live a bit too far away to really enjoy them. I bet they’re pretty bitter too.
So, we wondered if this pattern in Colorado was true elsewhere. Check out some of these state maps that we found over at the New York Times.
Wyoming: Totally a red state, except for Teton County, home of Jackson Hole, and Albany County, which is where the University of Wyoming is, but we’ll just attribute that Obama win to their small local resort, called Snowy Range.
Idaho: Rather red, huh? Well check out Blaine County, home of the famous Sun Valley!
Utah: This notorious red state has just two islands of blue: Summit County, home of Park City, and Grand County, home of Moab. Moab doesn’t really have snowboarding, or snow, but the kickass mountain biking makes it awesome enough, I guess.
Nevada: Anyone who’s been to rural Nevada knows there’s some crazy backwoods folk there. Thank goodness for the Tahoe/Reno area, adding some Obama votes to that equation. And of course, Las Vegas has the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort, so we’re sure that’s why they went blue.
So what does this tell us? Apparently a lot of ski and snowboard bums are democrats. Yay, does that mean I can stop pretending to be politically neutral?

I’m not so sure Obama is going to save us from global warming....so I’m doubting that’s it. But it could possibly be that the majority of skit-town populations would like for Marijuana to be legalized and perhaps they’re hoping that the most liberal Senator in America’s history will make that a reality? Just throwing that out there....

I didn’t say Obama would save us from global warming, I said McCain could have hurried it up.
This blog was just meant in humor, but in reality, the core population of the ski towns I’ve lived in is very liberal and politically active. I don’t think their biggest concern is weed.

I don’t think that’s a fair assessment. I live in a ski town and know many people that voted Obama in ski towns and none of us are pushing to legalize marijuana. There are much greater things at stake here and judging people that live in ski towns is very lame.

yikes! I was aware no one was claiming global warming was going to be conquered by Obama...and my post by no means intended to be taken as factual information or as a final thought, hence the “just throwing it out there”. It was more humorous as well, but I understand if it was taken as funny. pardons, I wasn’t intending to hurt feelings.

DearTragedy
i’m a bit disappointed there is a post on shredbetties where politics is the main focus:( i like to come on here to talk snowboarding! neither candidate would have done anything about ‘global warming’ because it’s not a problem! the earth goes through changes all the time; warming up and cooling down!
