Get excited!

Can’t wait to start snowboarding?  I know I know!  Us too!  But, guess what?  Loveland resort in Colorado started making snow last night.... therefore there is snow on runs in Colorado.  What’s even better?  Last year, A-Basin opened on October 10th, which is only 16 days away.  That’s right!  Pull out all your gear, cause you’re gonna need it pretty soon.

WTF Wednesday - Clear Snowboards

For years, I’ve been distressed by the fact that my snowboard wasn’t transparent. Since my snowboards have all been opaque, I’ve never been able to look at the snow I’m standing on to see if it’s different from the snow just over there.  And when I’m sitting on the lift watching a gaper about to wipe out below me, sometimes my snowboard blocks my view of the action. Plus, there are all of the times I’ve posed for a Snow Photo, and they made me hold my snowboard, blocking everyone’s majestic view of something much more important… ME!

Somebody stop me!

I have an online shopping problem. Not at Macy’s or Gucci. In fact, I could care less about that kind of thing. Instead, I’m busy perusing online snowboard shops. FOR EVERYTHING. August is a KILLER time of year for me. It’s when I hit up YouTube and watch different homemade snowboarding flicks, start checking the weather to see what the temperature will be like across the country and try to find the most promising Farmer’s Almanac forecast.

80’s music videos WTF

The 80’s gave us many wonderful trends and had us often shaking our heads going why.  With my ever appreciation for the love of all things 80’s metal (read hair bands) I figured I’d share these lost gems of WTF were they thinking.

First up Krokus’s Screaming in the night
This movie has ultimate cheese it looks like a horrible version of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome with a little bit of music sprinkled in and possibly some rejects from the Safety Dance video.

How I spent my summer vacation

What’s this? What’s back? Could it be....Beanie Thursday??? IT IS! Yay!

I hope you all had lovely summers and did all sorts of summer things like going to the beach and spending time outdoors without wearing 18 layers of super technical fabrics that promise to keep you warm without making you sweat. But as we all know, the biggest problem with summer is that knit hats don’t really seem logical. In fact, beanies pretty much go into hibernation during the summer months. And while it’s still not cool enough to start wearing them yet, I figure it’s fall (er, well almost. A couple of days), so it’s time to start planning for the new collections!

WTF… MC Hammer Pants are Back?

While I’m learning to accept that as I become older, some bad trends from my youth will be cycling back around, I kinda hoped that some of the REALLY bad stuff would slip away without getting picked up.  Like, especially the stuff that is extremely unflattering and/or bizarre.  For instance, things that make it look like you have an insanely long torso and tiny legs.  Or, you know, flannel lumberjack shirts.  Oh god, I hope people don’t start wearing 5 layers of different colored scrunchy socks again.

Hidden Valley Ski Resort Closes

So after reading this article about this ski resort in St. Louis closing, I got to thinking… I would be SO PISSED if a resort just up and closed on me, especially if new owners didn’t plan on reopening it. Like, what would I do with my winter if my home mountain closed? It would be so inconvenient, not to mention sad that the place you first learned to snowboard was no more. And you’d waste so much gas trying to get to the next “local” hill. I don’t think I have much to worry about, especially come this winter… but either way, I’m sorry for those of you in St. Louis. That sucks.

A Poem

Let me preface this by saying I am NOT a poet. However, a few glasses of wine will get you thinkin’ about how much this time of year actually sucks. It’s RIGHT on the cusp of being cold. You can feel it. Websites get updated, new product is everywhere, ticket/pass prices are posted… Winter is only 2-3 months away. So here it is. I’ve entitled it, ever so eloquently, “Summer sucks.” Enjoy.

WTF Thursday: Buyers Guides

Somehow my Wednesday slipped away from me, without ever writing my WTF column. Is it bad that I’m missing the date already, on just the third column? Pretty soon it’ll be WTF Two Weeks From Saturday.

Anyway, this week I’m annoyed with buyers guides. We’ve been getting in all the buyers guides from those bigger, fancier, printedier magazines, and each time I open one, I find myself disappointed.

I Love Superconglomerates

I love big companies in the snowboard world as everyone knows. They do a lot for this industry and keep companies that would probably crap out and disappear around longer. They also buy up failing big companies and breathes life back into them.

Snotty Skiers. Meh

So I’m walking around the bar tonight handing out cheaply made t-shirts and baseball caps for a beer that shall remain nameless (I’m a liquor promoter. I don’t just randomly cheer lead for alcohol companies.) Anyway, I come to a table, give them my spiel on why they should order said beer, and somehow we got on the topic of winter. This doesn’t surprise me, as I have a one track mind.

KFC = Kooky Foolish Commentators

Today I flipped the channel to MSNBC to see if any Olympic events that were worth watching were getting air time. Well, instead they had Tiki Barber and some chick commenting on highlights of the previous day’s events. This just happens to include BMX racing (is it just me, or did anybody else not know BMX racing was in the Olympics now?). This was hands down the most amusing commentary I’ve EVER heard. They kept talking about how you were more likely to hear “Dude” and “Radical” at the BMX track, and trying to throw in “Rad speak” like that. Pretty much, they could not have made bigger fools of themselves. Just thought I’d share this tidbit.

WTF Wednesday: Burton’s Lovely Boots

For the second installment of my bitchy column, I thought I might bring up that bigger companies also have some WTF moments. Case in point: the Burton Modern Boot, which is possibly the ugliest boot on the market this season (though I can’t be sure, I think we also have a contender in the Vans Omni).

The New “Tight Pants”

If you’ve read the interviews in the Betties section of our site, you’ve seen that most people stated that the worst trend in snowboarding has been tight pants on the hill. I hate to admit it, but I’ve almost gotten so used to seeing this that it’s not such a big deal to me anymore. Now something else has taken its place.. Unzipped Jackets. Why are so many shredders rocking the open jacket…I don’t really get it? It’s one thing to have your jacket/hoodie zipped up half-way, but another to have it flapping around in the wind and wing-like when you jump. Sometimes, at least to me, it makes tricks look sloppier. And, when you eat it there’s way more snow down your pants/sleeves/shirt than normal.

Age Minimums

As of late, most of us on the Shred Betties staff have gotten sick…with Olympic fever. It’s not that we’re die hard sports fanatics, or routinely follow unusual events like synchronized diving, the triple jump, table tennis, or trampoline (which actually may be the sickest sport ever). It’s not even that we’re following the games because it’s what’s expected in our culture because of all the hype. There’s just something captivating about watching your country go all out, shattering world records or making history, in the pursuit of a medal that comes once every four years. Even if it’s watching sports that normally you don’t care to watch like swimming, volleyball, gymnastics, and the list goes on.

WTF Wednesday: Glowboards

Through the wonderful world of Myspace, we get all kinds of requests from companies trying to make a mark in the snowboard industry, so I thought I’d start sharing some of them with you. This week, we got a friend request from a new company called “Glowboardz.”

Hoodie Hump Day

Yes, I know it’s not tuesday, but it’s summer and you don’t see many people wearing hoodies so hoodie tuesday has taken a hiatus. However, good ‘ol Wednesday (or hump day as it’s sometimes called) is a little lonely. So we’re giving it some love (get it? Hump day, love? I crack myself up sometimes).

Anti Core

As long as snowboarding has been around, there has always been an attitude the that we were an underground sport, that we were “core”. To this day, people still feel this image exists and strive to try and maintain a sense of “core”. I won’t deny that I was one of these people for years, but as snowboarding changed, and I grew older my idea of what snowboarding is has moved forward with the times. However, many people and companies still stick to this image as if it is the end-all-be-all of what snowboarding represents.
