Our Favorites at the X-Games
On a lighter note, in case you’re having trouble finding footage of the chicks on expn.com, we’ve compiled a few of our favorites:
Claudia Fliri is a Shred Betties staff favorite; we’ve been seeing great footage and photography of this Austrian rider from competitions across Europe. She didn’t let us down in her first X-Games appearance, placing 2nd and hitting the big jumps that were taking down most of the other girls, including a huge 540 over the 60 foot gap:

The X-Games Makes Me Angry
vSo, admittedly, I’m not too into competitions. I don’t really do that kind of riding, and while I find the tricks in the pipe and slopestyle to be impressive, if I had to chose a favorite pro rider, it’d be someone more like Victoria Jealouse or Jeremy Jones (the big mountain one). I dig the creativity and passion for snowboarding that these riders show as they pitch themselves off cliffs and down 60 degree grades that would make most people pee their pants and faint. And barf. Even the jibber videos are fun to watch, you can see the kids are trying new things and experiment. Competitions, on the other hand, seem a bit too staged to me. There’s no room to try something new or be creative.
However, I was pretty excited for my first opportunity to check out the X-Games in person. Sure, I hadn’t paid a whole lot of attention to the event in the past, but I figured now that I live 20 minutes away from the venue, it’d be worthwhile to go see. Plus, the folks at Girls Learn to Ride helped us out with access to the Pac Sun Lounge for the Women’s Superpipe Event - which turned out to be a raised area below the judges booth with a great view of the pipe.

Hiking at 13,000 Feet is Hard!
This weekend, we decided it’d be fun to hit up Silverton Mountain, to find the steep and deep. For those of you don’t know, Silverton is an advanced/experts only mountain that offers guided-only riding off a single somewhat rickety chairlift that takes you up about 2000 feet of vertical. From there, you hike anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour to find the best pow stash your guide knows of. With a huge unstable snowpack in Colorado this year, we’ve had a tough time venturing into the backcountry, so we figured Silverton could give us a backcountry style experience (pit toilets included) with a ski patrol around and a bit more of a safety factor.

Kitties and Pandas and Frogs, Oh my!
Winter has returned to New York, and that means my beanies are out in full force! Beanie time really is the best time of year.
This week, we’re reverting back to our childhood a bit. Ah, being a kid. Remember when it was totally acceptable to wear ludicrous things and people wouldn’t look at you like you need to go get professional help? One of my favorite things to see is kids running around the park in outfits they obviously picked out themselves, like pink tutus with red rain boots and striped tights and a top with unicorns on it. You know that the kid is going to either grow up to thank her parents for allowing her to foster her creativity, or will be absolutely appalled when her mom pulls out those pictures the first time her boyfriend comes over for dinner.

A Beanie That’s the Cat’s Pajamas
This week we’ve got a beanie that harkens back to days of speakeasies, the Charleston, and the horror known as prohibition. That’s right, we’re heading back to the Roaring 20’s!

The Schick Quattro Slopeside Studio
The other day, Sara asked me if I thought it was a bit odd that Paul Mitchell sponsors the US Snowboarding Grand Prix series. Maybe our vision of snowboarders is warped somehow, but I don’t really picture the 75% male snowboarder population buying expensive salon quality hair care products.

Beanies Make the World Go Round
Hello and welcome back to Beanie Thursdays! I must apologize for my slacking over the past couple of weeks, but now I’m back. In full force. Go beanie Go!
Anyway, I have a challenge for you all. I want you to show off whatever beanies you aquired during the holiday season, whether it was for Christmas, birthdays, Solstice, or just something you bought yourself because no one seems to understand your beanie addiction. I’ll show off the legion of Beanie lovers in a future post! Send pictures of yourself and your beanie to julie at shredbetties dot com.
Onto this week’s beanie.

ice… woof
so i’m on the way to hunter mountain. we are about 11 miles away and on the token narrow twisty-turny road going up hill through the mountains. usually, this is my favorite part.. ya know, nature n’ all. so we’re driving along listening to kody’s crappy music and following this kid thats in a black nissan in front of us. out of NO WHERE he does what resembles a move out of Tokyo Drift and 180’s down the road avoiding the guard rail. of course, we weren’t so lucky.
