Freshies: Recharge

A few weeks ago, we got a really heavy package in the mail, which was rather intriguing.  Turns out it wasn’t a new trend towards ultra-heavy bindings, or 30 pounds of chocolate, but rather, a box of sports drinks.  Frankly, I was kinda bummed it wasn’t 30 pounds of chocolate… mmm 30 pounds of chocolate… and I’m not really a fan of sports drinks.  Being a tree hugging granola eating vegetarian type, I normally eat stuff that’s organic and natural, and things that come in colors like neon green and ice blue kind of scare me.

However, the “all natural” on the label lured me into giving them a try.  And much to my delight, they were really yummy!  They’re actually made without all that high fructose corn syrup and food coloring and stuff - just fruit juice, filtered water, sea salt, and some vitamins.  Since they’re a mixture of fruit juice and water, they taste a bit lighter and less sugary than fruit juice.  I especially liked the Lemon flavor, which pretty much tasted like lemonade. The green apple (pictured above) tasted like a green apple jolly rancher.  Much better than “red” flavored Gatorade.  What kind of fruit is red again?

So, we figured we’d test the drinks out with some kind of athletic endeavor.  There wasn’t any snow around at the time, so we headed out to the desert for a backpacking trip.  My boyfriend read the label and griped that they didn’t have as much stuff in them as his powdered uber sports stuff from GNC, and claimed he didn’t want any.  I suspect this was just a ploy to make me carry them, since we got to camp, he stole a bottle.  Suspicious.  We were both unexpectedly impressed with how well they worked.  He has a super high metabolism and gets really lethargic after exercise, so appreciated the dose of sugar and nutrition.  I don’t have this problem, since I can survive off my fat ass, but I do usually get bad headaches from dehydration when hiking in dry areas, and the drink had a noticeable effect on that.  So thumbs up on all acounts!
