Supergirl Jam 2010

Top female rail riders in the world converged in Venice Beach,CA last weekend to battle it out for $5000.00 and the title of Supergirl and these ladies did not disappoint! Putting on quite a show for the audience. The set up this year was built differently utilizing a single flat rail and a narrow box. This was a big step up from the one rail they’ve had in the past. The vibe was amazing as all the girls were relaxed and ready to have fun.

Snow was blown right before the contest so the conditions were excellent and the riding began. With an hour for practice, the girls swore they would take it easy and save their energy but that went right out the window when the first girl dropped. It was a real competition from start to finish and the ladies never let up, which granted us access to one of the best female throw downs I’ve personally seen to date.

Seven Shred Betties girls represented with Claire Hewitt-Demeyer always a crowd favorite with her gnarly falls, Erika Vikander, Ashley Thornton and Randa Shahin stomping their tricks. Then of course there was Paige Rainear and Madison Blackley staying true to their roots and stepping it up with the technical tricks. I have to admit I was sort of shocked to hear Megan Ginter was going to be at the rail jam because she is the big air queen but to my surprise Megan looked just as comfortable on the rails as she does on a 60 foot booter, stomping tricks with style and ease. I must give props to Gabby Maiden and Desiree Melancon for increasing their bag of tricks and really throwing down some bangers. It was very impressive to see their personal progression.

In the end Laurie Currier was unable to remain queen of her throne but remained on top when she snagged third. Desiree Melancon deservedly got second with her improved trick prowess and Danyale Patterson a virtual unknown youngster from Alaska came out of nowhere to steal the crown to become this years raining Supergirl.

All in all it was an amazing contest. These girls showed the spectators in Venice Beach, CA what female snowboarders are capable of doing and it just keeps getting better. Thanks to A.S.A.’s Courtney Dornstein and Denise Abbott for their hard work and commitment, making the Supergirl contest one the ladies and the world look forward to all summer.
