Danyale Patterson on her film “Too Hard”
Danyale Patterson is not only the producer, director and editor of a new all-girl film “TOO HARD”, but she’s also riding in it. Her trailer shows a lot of promise - it’s funny, full of action, and highlights some truly talented female snowboarders. We caught up with her to see whats in store for us with this film.
Here’s the trailer:
Hometown: Anchorage, AK
Home Mtn: Hilltop, Anchorage, AK
Years riding: 8
Tell us why you decided to make this film “TOO HARD”?
I decided to make a a chick flick because I wanted to do something new. Editing is fun and I wanted to challenge myself. So far its been pretty interesting so I’m stoked.
What is your background in filming and editing?
When I was a kid, my dream was to make music videos. So I started making several little edits but nothing serious and my filming sucked before last winter. This last winter, every time I was around a filmer, I would ask tons of questions and try to learn a much as I could. I learned a LOT and it was really fun! Filming can be super boring and takes patience but I had fun learning something new.
What comes first for your film, the snowboarding or the art?
I kinda think the comedy comes first. I want it to be more funny than anything. Then riding and then art. Also good music is clutch. I will spend half of my time just looking for a perfect soundtrack.
This film features all girls, was there one girl or group of ladies you really wanted to work with?
One thing I hate about the snowboard industry is how cliquey it is. So I told myself I would use at least one shot of anyone that wanted to be in this film and I would make it entertaining no matter how good or bad the footage is. So, no there were no girls I was more or less stoked on. I worked with girls that wanted to be in the movie, but its a small world so most of them were girls I already snowboard with anyways.
Who is in the film?
Myself, Fancy Rutherford, Darrah Reid-McLean, Marie Hucal, Madison Blackley, Gadrielle Maiden, Taylor Elliot, Alice Gorton, Mary Rand, Jessi Huege, Joanie Robichaud, Desiree Melancon and more
Anything exciting or crazy happen while filming this year?
Yeah of course. We traveled all over the continent and went to the hospital several times.
Who went to the hospital the most?
Madison Blackley for sure. ridiculous.
Any banger parts we should be excited to see?
Yeah these girls get buck. Parts will be short due to the lack of snow this winter but there are definitely bangers.
Was your focus for this film mainly urban riding?
Yeah. We tried to do some back country in AK and we got some funny bails but not much else. Back country riding means getting up early and we just dont do that.
Why do you think it’s so hard to get support as a female rider/filmer?
This is a male dominated sport. Girls are the underdogs of snowboarding. I think keeping things low key is cooler anyways, so I’m down.
What are your plans for the summer?
Working on the movie mostly, doing premiers and promotional stuff, and school.
Do you have filming plans for next season?
Not yet. Everything I do is pretty last minute.
Whats up for you on the snowboarding side of things?
I’m still snowboarding, stackin’ footy.
What’s your dream for the future?
Haha, I have so many. I want to get a job filming and editing, but I’m not sure where it will take me. I also want to help save animals in some way so maybe I will try to get a job with WWF or something. Also I want to buy my mom a mansion, and become the president so I can create kitty island.
What’s your plan for releasing the film? Online? Premier events?
I’d like to premier it at Mt. Hood a couple times during late July. and post it in August
